Ballerina is a 2016 English-language Canadian-French 3D computer-animated musical adventure comedy film co-directed by Éric Summer and Éric Warin. The screenplay, by Summer, Carol Noble and Laurent Zeitoun, with music by Klaus Badelt, concerns a poor orphan girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina and gets a chance to audition for the celebrated school of the Paris Opera Ballet.

The film stars the voices of Elle Fanning, Dane DeHaan, Maddie Ziegler and Carly Rae Jepsen. It was released in theatres in France and the UK in December 2016. The film is set to be released in the US on August 30, 2017, under the title Leap!, with Nat Wolff replacing DeHaan, and Kate McKinnon and Mel Brooks added.

Synopsis

In the 1880s, Félicie (Elle Fanning), a poor orphan girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina, but lacks any formal training, runs away from her orphanage in rural Brittany and goes to beautiful Paris accompanied by her friend, a young inventor, Victor (Dane DeHaan), but they soon become separated, as Victor becomes an office boy in Gustave Eiffel's workshop. Félicie gets a chance to audition for the celebrated school of the Paris Opera Ballet by briefly assuming the identity of the ruthless, snobby and bratty Camille Le Haut (Maddie Ziegler). Penniless, and without any formal dance experience, 11-year-old Félicie finds her training, and making friends at the ballet school among her fellow-students, to be very difficult. She finds a mentor: a mysterious cleaning woman with a limp, Odette (Carly Rae Jepsen), who turns out to be a former prima ballerina. With no technique but great determination, and the help of Odette and Victor, Félicie faces many failures and challenges. Mérante (Terrence Scammell), the school's exacting choreographer, dismisses the worst dancer in each class, so the pressure is great for Félicie to improve quickly to avoid elimination and claim the role of Clara in The Nutcracker. She has the courage to follow her passion and works hard to turn her dreams into reality

Production

The film was produced at L'Atelier Animation in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The filmmakers used key frame animation of Aurélie Dupont and Jérémie Bélingard, two star dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet, to translate realistic dance choreography to the animated film. Dupont became the de facto choreographer of the film's dance sequences.

Music

The soundtrack album was released internationally by Gaumont on December 12, 2016. The album features both the film's original score composed by Klaus Badelt, and songs from other artists that are used in the film. The film includes songs by Carly Rae Jepsen and Sia that are not included on the album

Produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni, the film is first of two cinematic parts simultaneously shot in Telugu and Tamil. The film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah and Anushka Shetty in lead roles. Sathyaraj, Ramya Krishnan, Nassar, Adivi Sesh, Tanikella Bharani and Sudeep appear in supporting roles. The soundtrack and background score were composed by M. M. Keeravani while the cinematography, editing, art direction and visual effects supervision were done by K. K. Senthil Kumar, Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao, Sabu Cyril and V. Srinivas Mohan respectively.


The film, which was made on a budget of ₹180 crore (US$28 million)[8] released worldwide on 10 July 2015 to positive reviews from critics, becoming the highest grossing Indian film within India,[9] the third highest grossing Indian film globally, the first and only South Indian film to gross over ₹650 crore (US$100 million) worldwide, the first non-Hindi film to gross over ₹100 crore (US$15 million) in the dubbed Hindi version, and the highest grossing Telugu film of all time.

The international version of the film edited by Vincent Tabaillon was screened at various film festivals, and got nominated for Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film by the American Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. The Telugu version garnered the Best Feature Film-Golden Lotus Award, and the Best Special Effects at the 63rd National Film Awards.
